Opposition Alliance Strengthens as Gogoi Submits Papers.webp

Guwahati, March 20 Raijor Dal president and MLA Akhil Gogoi submitted his nomination papers for the Sivasagar Assembly constituency in the eastern Assam district on Friday.

The regional outfit had joined the opposition alliance after finalizing a seat-sharing arrangement late on Thursday night, and is now part of the six-party bloc, which includes the Congress.

Leading a procession of supporters before submitting his papers, Gogoi also paid obeisance at the historic Sivadol in the town.

Speaking to reporters, he said, "From constructing new roads and infrastructure to preserving heritage, I have worked for the people of my constituency over the last five years. I once again seek their support to continue serving them."

Gogoi claimed that with the majority of the opposition parties coming together, the ruling BJP-led NDA will be ousted from power.

"The united opposition will uproot the BJP and its divisive politics. I will not only retain my seat but our party will win in at least 10 seats," he claimed.

The Raijor Dal will field candidates as united opposition nominees in 11 constituencies, while there will be a "friendly contest" in a couple of others.

The party was formed ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections, and Gogoi is its lone MLA, who had fought the elections while in prison facing sedition charges for allegedly instigating violence during the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests.

Polling for the 126-member Assam Assembly will be held on April 9. Votes will be counted on May 4.
