Colombo, April 10 Sri Lanka's Minister of Power and Energy, Kumara Jayakodi, survived a no-confidence motion moved by the opposition in parliament on Friday.
This was the first no-confidence motion against the current National People's Power government of Anura Kumara Dissanayake, which was elected in 2024 on a strong anti-corruption platform.
The motion was defeated with 49 votes in favor and 153 against.
Jayakodi was accused of causing a massive loss to the state by mishandling the procurement of coal and endangering national energy security by misusing the state procurement process.
Speaking in the debate, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya said that the opposition was unable to prove any of the accusations against the minister.
Jayakodi defended his actions, stating that he and his party were strictly committed to upholding the anti-corruption principles of the National People's Power government.
Jayakodi has already been indicted by the Bribery and Corruption Commission for misconduct in his previous position at the State Fertilizer Corporation.
The opposition argued that Jayakodi should resign due to the seriousness of the allegations against him.
