Mumbai, April 4 Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi leader Prakash Ambedkar on Saturday claimed that the names of as many as 2.9 crore voters could be deleted in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Maharashtra's electoral rolls.
He further claimed that such a large-scale deletion of names could directly influence the outcome of upcoming elections in the state.
"If Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had gathered affected families from a ward where the Election Commission had reduced the number of voters due to discrepancies identified during the SIR and presented them to the media, it would have proven that the Election Commission is engaging in fraud," Ambedkar told reporters here.
In a social media post, he also questioned the functioning of the ECI. "Irregularities in the voter list revision process could lead to the exclusion of a large number of voters in the state," he said.
The Special Intensive Revision is conducted by the Election Commission to remove discrepancies in voter lists, including duplicate entries and the names of deceased persons.
However, opposition parties have repeatedly alleged that the process is being misused to selectively exclude voters belonging to certain ideologies or communities.
