The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Prisons, Chhattisgarh, regarding the reported deaths of 285 inmates in various prisons across the state over the past four years. Taking the matter suo motu, the Commission has requested a detailed report within two weeks. According to media reports, the state's prisons are largely overcrowded, which is leading to increased infection rates and mental stress among the inmates.
