Islamabad, March 26 – An explosion destroyed a government school in the village of Ghora, in the Bannu city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan, on Thursday, according to local media reports.

The explosion occurred after unidentified assailants planted explosives at the Government Primary School Noor Jan Baka Khel in the village of Ghora, according to Dawn, Pakistan's leading daily. The explosion completely destroyed the school building.

According to police sources, militants were allegedly present inside the school and were preparing an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) when the explosion took place, as reported. This claim has not yet been officially confirmed.

A police official stated that reports of a possible suicide attack had been received, with the Bannu Police Lines believed to be the target. The Bannu Police Lines Road has been closed to all traffic, and security has been increased across the city to prevent any untoward incident.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan has experienced a rise in targeted attacks in the past year. The Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) revealed in its annual report that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa witnessed a rise in violence last year, with fatalities increasing from 1,620 in 2024 to 2,331 in 2025.

Last week, an assistant sub-inspector of the Elite Force was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the Mano Banda area of Gandigar in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to police.

Bacha Yousaf Khan was targeted by unidentified assailants outside his residence. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. According to police sources, Khan was on his way to the mosque to offer prayers when he was targeted, as reported by Dawn. The Gandigar police have registered a case against the unknown assailants and have begun an investigation.

On March 13, at least seven police personnel were killed in a blast near a police vehicle in the Bettani tribal area of Lakki Marwat district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. According to a spokesperson for the local police, the explosion occurred near a police mobile, resulting in the death of six police personnel and the injury of one policeman, as reported by Geo News, Pakistan's leading media outlet.
