Pakistan Suspends Afghan Repatriation After Incident.webp

Peshawar, March 27 Pakistan suspended the repatriation of undocumented Afghan nationals via the Torkham border on Friday after a security official was injured in firing from the other side of the border, officials said.

The incident occurred late on Thursday at a border check-post near Torkham, hours after the border crossing was opened between Pakistan and Afghanistan to facilitate the return of stranded illegal Afghan citizens.

Following the incident, the authorities halted the registration process of Afghan nationals despite the presence of officials from multiple departments to facilitate returns.

Around 220 undocumented Afghan refugees had been repatriated on Thursday, before operations came to a halt.

Security forces have been placed on high alert, in view of the deteriorating security situation and "aggressive behaviour" from the Afghan side, officials said.

The Torkham border crossing has been closed since February 26 with the launch of Operation Ghazab lil-Haq.

Operation Ghazab lil-Haq is a large-scale military offensive launched by Pakistan against the Afghan Taliban.

Earlier this month, the authorities decided to act against the illegal Afghan nationals under the Foreigners Act 1946 for the implementation of the single visa regime.
