In 2021, when V.D. Satheesan was chosen as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly by the Congress-led UDF, it was seen as a strategic move to revitalize the UDF's prospects ahead of the 2026 elections.
Challenging a well-established Marxist leader like Pinarayi Vijayan, who was serving his second term as Chief Minister, was considered a significant challenge for a politician rising through the ranks of the Congress via student politics.
However, Kerala witnessed the remarkable rise of Satheesan, who led the UDF to victories in by-elections, the Lok Sabha elections, and later in local body elections.
As the state prepares for its upcoming elections, the question remains whether Satheesan can replicate this success across the state, including his constituency of Paravur, where he faces a strong opponent.
E.T. Taison, a candidate for the LDF (Left Democratic Front), stated that he would defeat the UDF's potential chief ministerial candidate in his home constituency.
The coastal constituency of Ernakulam district, with a voter base of over 1.91 lakh, has historically been loyal to the Congress, although the CPI has also experienced periods of dominance in previous decades.
Congress has held this constituency since 2001, when Satheesan won it, ending decades of Left dominance.
Satheesan, who began his political career in Paravur as a leader of the Kerala Students Union (KSU), experienced a defeat in 1996 at the hands of CPI's P. Raju.
Despite this setback, he worked diligently in the constituency and gradually built a strong grassroots network, transforming his image into that of an accessible leader.
This sustained engagement translated into electoral success, allowing him to win five consecutive terms.
His victory margins have steadily increased, reaching over 20,000 votes in both 2016 and 2021, demonstrating his dominance even during challenging political circumstances.
In the last Assembly elections, he secured over 82,000 votes, defeating CPI's M.T. Nixon by more than 21,000 votes.
During a recent campaign rally in the constituency, Satheesan emphasized the consistent large victory margins he has achieved and described the constituency as deeply important to him.
"The people here are like my family," Satheesan stated.
Reji, a Congress leader in Paravur, stated that no party worker is preoccupied with the election results, but is focused on achieving a significant lead.
"We expect Satheesan's lead to exceed 30,000 this time. We have already completed the first phase of our campaign efforts in all 222 booths," he told
