Kannur (Kerala), April 11 An all-party meeting convened by the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) on Saturday, in the wake of post-poll violence in the Payyannur constituency here, decided that strict action would be taken to curb further provocations and that cases would be registered in all incidents reported so far.
In Payyannur, CPI(M) rebel leader V Kunhikrishnan contested as an Independent with UDF support.
Following the end of polling on Thursday, several incidents of attacks on houses and destruction of property were reported from across the constituency, prompting the meeting chaired by ADM in-charge K Balagopalan.
A government press release said that the meeting decided that no statements or remarks defaming political leaders or candidates personally should be made.
To restore a peaceful atmosphere, it was also decided to increase police pickets and intensify patrolling by deploying additional personnel, it said.
Representatives of various political parties, who condemned the incidents of violence, assured the meeting that there would be no provocative statements or violent incidents in the coming days, officials said.
The ADM said that night patrolling would be intensified and vehicles fitted with cameras would be deployed in the area.
Fifteen vehicles of the flying squad used during the election will be utilised for the purpose.
In addition, CCTV cameras will be installed in sensitive areas to ensure round-the-clock surveillance, the statement said.
The meeting was attended by Payyannur DySP R Shaiju, Tahsildar G Suresh Babu, Peringome SHO Mukundan K K, C Sathyapalan (CPI-M), K Jayaraj (Congress), V Kunhikrishnan (UDF candidate), Panakkeel Balakrishnan (BJP), S A Shukkoor Haji (Muslim League), K V Padmanabhan (CPI), P Jayan (Congress-S), K Rajan (Kerala Congress-B) and Sameer P P (RSP).
