New Delhi, April 11 BJP national president Nitin Nabin paid tributes to social reformer Jyotirao Phule on his 199th birth anniversary and said his work for advancing women's empowerment and social reform continues to inspire people.
Phule was born on April 11, 1827, in Maharashtra and died on November 28, 1890.
"On the 199th birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, we paid our tributes to him. The role he played in social reform – from opposing practices like Sati to promoting women's and girls' education – is remembered by the nation even today.
"From establishing the first girls' school to his active efforts in ending such social evils, his contributions remain relevant even in the present era," Nabin told reporters at the BJP headquarters here.
He also credited the Centre's initiatives with carrying forward Phule's vision of women's empowerment.
"Our leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, through initiatives like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and efforts to make women self-reliant, has worked towards ensuring respect, dignity and security for women. We believe these efforts are in line with the ideals of Jyotirao Phule," the BJP chief said.
Nabin further said that the proposed 33 per cent reservation for women under the Nari Vandan Adhiniyam will further empower them.
