Etah (UP), March 30 Tension gripped the district of Awagarh on Monday after the mutilated remains of five bovine animals were discovered near a railway line in Gadesra Bamba, according to police.
Awagarh Police Station SHO Akhilesh Dixit said villagers found the carcasses in the bushes near the railway line.
The police called in a team of veterinary doctors to collect the carcasses as evidence and conduct a post-mortem.
As the news spread, people belonging to Hindu organizations arrived at the area and demanded the arrest of those responsible for the animals' deaths.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shyam Narain Singh has constituted a special police team to investigate the matter.
A case has been registered against unidentified individuals.
Singh said they are scrutinizing CCTV footage from the surrounding areas, and police have been deployed in the area.
