Bhopal, March 28 Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced cash rewards ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 for 113 police officers who assisted injured victims after the recent Chhindwara bus accident, officials said on Saturday.
The CM praised the personnel from the Police Training School (PTS) Rewa and the Chhindwara district police for their prompt rescue efforts, according to an official release.
Police said that 10 people were killed and 31 others were injured when a bus returning from a chief minister’s programme collided with a pickup vehicle in Chhindwara on Thursday evening. Three to four injured people remained in critical condition.
According to the release, a PTS Rewa team travelling behind the bus rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation without delay. Several personnel ran to the scene barefoot and pulled out injured people while walking over broken glass, it said.
The PTS team alerted the emergency helpline ‘112’, lifted the overturned bus by nearly three feet, and rescued those trapped underneath. They later assisted Dial-112 and local police in shifting the injured persons to the district hospital, the release said.
Police said that the personnel’s courage and dedication helped save around 40 lives.
A total of 113 police officers, including five officers, over 100 constables of PTS Rewa, and personnel from the Chhindwara district police, will receive cash rewards between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 for their efforts, the release said.
Hours after the accident, the chief minister had announced Rs 4 lakh each for the kin of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for seriously injured persons. On Friday, an additional Rs 4 lakh each was announced for the deceased’s families under the ‘Sambal’ scheme, taking the total compensation to Rs 8 lakh each.
