February 21, New Delhi — Venezuelan authorities have granted amnesty to 379 political prisoners following the enactment of a new mass amnesty law after the removal of former leader Nicolás Maduro.
The law, unanimously approved by Venezuela's National Assembly, aims to provide relief to individuals who have been charged or convicted on political grounds during decades of authoritarian rule.
National Assembly deputy Jorge Arreaza stated in a televised interview that requests have been submitted by the Public Prosecutor's Office to the courts to grant amnesty measures for the 379 individuals, who are expected to be released "between tonight and tomorrow morning."
The legislation follows years of political detentions and comes amid broader reforms under interim authorities after Maduro's departure.
