
Guwahati, April 6 Vehicle movement along the India-Bhutan border in Assam has been restricted from Monday, in view of the state assembly elections in the northeastern region, officials said.
The restrictions will remain in place until the end of the polling process, they said.
Tamulpur District Magistrate and District Election Officer Simi Karan, in an order, said restrictions have been imposed at entry and exit routes from 5 pm on Monday.
The order was passed in accordance with the directives of the Election Commission to close all international land borders ahead of the April 9 state assembly polls.
Relaxations will be provided for individuals coming from Bhutan for medical emergencies, Indian citizens or foreign tourists who have already entered Bhutan with valid documents, tourists travelling to Bhutan with valid travel documents, and voters from the Tamulpur and Goreswer constituencies, it said.
Vehicles carrying perishable essential commodities will also be entitled to these relaxations at the border checkpoints.
The district administration has urged all concerned departments, security agencies, and the public to strictly comply with the directives, the statement added.
