
A parliamentary delegation from Portugal met with the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh, at the Parliament House in New Delhi today. The delegation was led by the Vice President of the Portuguese Parliament, Marcos Perestrello de Vasconcellos.
During the meeting, Mr. Harivansh emphasized that the relationship between India and Portugal is based on deep friendship, mutual respect, shared democratic values, historical and maritime connections, and cultural and diaspora linkages. He noted that 2025 marked the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. He praised Portugal's role in strengthening India's engagement with the European Union, noting that Portugal hosted the first India-EU Summit in 2000 and the India-EU+27 Leaders' Summit in Porto in 2021. He also mentioned the 16th India-EU Summit, co-chaired by former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, along with the President of the European Commission and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
