Dhaka, February 24 The new government of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has re-established a press wing for President Mohammad Shahabuddin at his office.
The president's press wing had been abolished by the previous interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
A statement from the Ministry of Public Administration said Mohammad Sarwar Alam has been re-appointed as the press secretary at the Bangabhaban presidential palace, and he "will serve in the role for a period of one year from the date of his joining."
Alam was serving as the press secretary when the change of government occurred in 2024, and Yunus' interim government scrapped his contractual appointment.
The positions of deputy press secretary and assistant press secretary were also eliminated simultaneously, along with two photographers who had served at Bangabhaban for 30 years.
In subsequent months, ceremonial photographs requiring the president to pose for pictures when foreign envoys presented their credentials or military, naval, and air force chiefs met him were released by the respective foreign embassies or the armed forces.
Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd president of the parliamentary form of unitary Bangladesh on April 24, 2023, during the rule of the Awami League.
Earlier on Sunday, Shahabuddin had alleged that Yunus had attempted to remove him from office several times.
In an interview with the leading Bangla newspaper Kalerkantha, the president said during the 18 months of the interim government's rule, he was "not involved in any discussions, but several plots were hatched against me."
