Los Angeles, March 22 – Hollywood star Ryan Gosling's casting in 'Project Hail Mary' has been described as "a dream" by the film's writer.
Screenwriter Drew Goddard was confident while writing the script, knowing that Ryan would be able to handle whatever he wrote, as reported by 'Female First UK'.
He told The Hollywood Reporter, "It was a dream. Ryan Gosling was already attached when I was approached. Any concerns I had about how we were going to achieve this were immediately dispelled by the knowledge that Ryan was involved".
"He can do anything. Whatever I write, he'll be able to pull it off. That set a tone of knowing that this was going to be very challenging, but also knowing that we were in good hands with our lead actor," he added.
According to 'Female First UK', 'Project Hail Mary' is based on the 2021 science fiction novel by American writer Andy Weir, which tells the story of a school teacher and former biologist, Ryland Grace, who wakes up aboard a spacecraft with amnesia.
While movie budgets are being slashed across the board, Goddard insisted that 'Project Hail Mary' needed its substantial budget, and he hopes its success will provide hope for new projects across the board.
He said, "A lot of my concerns about the budget are related to the decision to undertake the project. Before I start writing, I want to make sure that what I think it's going to cost aligns with what we think it's going to take. I've learned from experience that if they feel comfortable, they'll let me be more ambitious. So, something like 'Cabin in the Woods' was so ambitious. I knew we needed to make that for a lower budget. So I wrote it to be affordable, because then they'll let me be truly ambitious. With this one, there was no way to make a cheap version of this movie".
"We're not making this unless we're aiming high. But it felt like a movie that we could do. It felt like a movie that we could bring our kids to, and our grandparents. That's what you're looking for to justify the budgets. And when I'm writing it, I try to be thoughtful. But I don't try to ever undercut the ambition. I have a big imagination. Chris and Phil have an even bigger imagination. Once we've made the decision to say yes, we don't really think about the budget. It's more about what's going to make the best movie. I don't want to sound overly optimistic. It is sad what's happening, but we're going to go down swinging. And we're definitely going down swinging with this movie," he added.
