
March 16, Kathmandu — The Election Commission of Nepal released the names of all newly nominated candidates for proportional representation on Monday.
Out of the 110 seats under the proportional representation system, there are a total of 82 women from all parties.
All the political parties that gained national status in the March 5 parliamentary elections have selected their lawmakers under the proportional representation system from their closed lists and submitted the names to the Election Commission.
Following this, the ECN has published the list of PR members today. Now, the PR members will receive their certificates from the Election Commission of Nepal on March 19 at 11:30 am.
RSP, which emerged as the largest party, has won 125 seats in the House of Representatives (HoR) through the first-past-the-post system. In the proportional representation system, RSP has won 57 seats, with a list containing 48 women and 9 men. Of the selected individuals, 17 are from the Khas-Arya cluster, 16 from the Indigenous nationalities, 9 from the Madheshi community, 8 from the Dalit community, 4 from the Tharu community, and 3 from the Muslim cluster. The party secured 125 seats in the direct category, bringing its total to 182, which is just two seats short of a two-thirds majority.
A total of 14 women candidates have been elected to the House of Representatives (HoR) under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) electoral system, accounting for 8.5 per cent of the FPTP seats. Of these, 13 are elected from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and one from the Nepali Congress. No other party's women candidates secured victory under the FPTP system.
Currently, the HoR of Nepal has a total of 96 women members, bringing the total female representation to 35%. Nepal mandates at least 33% female representation in federal and provincial parliaments, largely achieved through a mixed electoral system combining first-past-the-post and proportional representation.
