Thiruvananthapuram, March 29 Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V D Satheesan, urged the Centre on Sunday to withdraw the proposed amendments to the FCRA, alleging that they could leave minority institutions in a vulnerable position.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he expressed concern over the proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), which are currently under consideration by Parliament.
"A particular concern is the provision that allows the central government to take control of the assets of organizations in cases where licenses are delayed or not renewed," he said.
This has triggered apprehensions among people, particularly minority-run organizations and institutions engaged in charitable and social service activities, the LoP pointed out.
"Minority institutions, which have historically played a significant role in the fields of education, healthcare, and social service, are especially anxious about these developments," he said.
He further cautioned that the amendments could disproportionately impact their functioning, impose additional administrative burdens, and hinder their ability to carry out essential community-oriented work.
Urging the government to reconsider the proposed changes, Satheesan called for a review of the amendments to ensure that genuine organizations are not adversely affected.
