
Chandigarh, April 1 Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh assumed the role of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Command on Wednesday after his predecessor, Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar, retired on March 31.
A member of the special forces Parachute Regiment, Lieutenant General Singh was commissioned into its fourth battalion in December 1987.
Singh, who studied at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun and Lucknow University, has held several key command and staff positions in his nearly 40 years of service.
He has led formations in high-altitude and sensitive areas along the northern and western borders, and participated in Operation Pawan and counter-insurgency operations along the Line of Control and the International Boundary.
Prior to assuming his current role, he had served as the Director General of Operational Logistics at the Army headquarters and later as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, where he contributed to operational planning and force development.
Singh has also undergone training at the College of Defence Management in Secunderabad and the Indian Institute of Public Administration. He holds a Master's degree in Philosophy from Panjab University.
For his exemplary service, Singh was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Sena Medal.
After taking over his new office, Lieutenant General Singh said that he would focus on maintaining operational readiness, encouraging innovation, and ensuring the welfare of soldiers.
