Chandigarh, March 10 Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attended the wedding ceremony of a farmer's daughter in Madina village in Haryana's Sonipat on Tuesday.
According to the Congress, Gandhi first met the farmer, Sanjay, during an impromptu stop in Madina village in 2023 and listened to stories of the struggles faced by farming families while working in the fields alongside him.
The leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha reached the village in the morning and was received by Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda and other party leaders.
Wearing a white t-shirt and green trousers, Gandhi savored traditional dishes and interacted with the family members and villagers. As a gesture of honor, the family tied a turban on him.
"Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attended the wedding ceremony of farmer Sanjay Malik's daughter in Sonipat," the Congress said in a post on X in Hindi.
"Jannayak (people's leader) Rahul Gandhi first met Sanjay ji in 2023. He worked alongside him in the fields and listened to the stories of the struggles faced by farming families," the party said in a post, which also showed pictures of his visit.
Gandhi had promised to stand by Sanjay Malik and his family through every joy and sorrow. Today, the "Jannayak" has become a part of their family's happiness, the post said.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda, who was with Gandhi during the wedding event, took to X to say, "In an era where prominent leaders vie with one another to attend the weddings of wealthy industrialists, Rahul Gandhi today fulfilled his promise of 'Kanyadaan' by attending the wedding of the daughter of Sanjay, the farmer in whose field he had helped plant paddy two years ago".
Notably, in July 2023, Gandhi had made an impromptu stop at Madina village, interacted with people and spent time with farmers working agricultural lands. During his visit, he took part in paddy sowing, drove a tractor and ate food brought by women labourers working in the fields.
