Strategic Project to Enhance Rail Connectivity in Southern and Western Sikkim
Guwahati, May 11 – In a significant push towards expanding railway infrastructure in Sikkim, the Railway Ministry has approved the final location survey for a new rail line from Melli to Dentam via Jorethang and Legship. The project, to be carried out by Northeast Frontier Railway, has received approval with an allocated budget of Rs 2.25 crore, according to an official statement released on Saturday.Bridging Key Connectivity Gaps
The proposed 75-kilometre route is seen as a strategic extension of the under-construction Sivok-Rangpo railway line, which is slated for completion by 2027. The new line aims to bridge a critical infrastructure gap by linking remote towns such as Dentam, located close to the India-Nepal border at Chiwabhanjyang, to the national railway grid.Melli, an important access point to southern and western Sikkim, is expected to serve as the junction for this proposed extension, ensuring seamless integration into the country's transportation system.
Economic and Strategic Importance
According to the official statement, the new rail link is poised to boost economic activity in regions like Gyalshing by enhancing access, promoting tourism, increasing trade opportunities, and generating local employment. The final location survey will be crucial in determining the technical feasibility, alignment, engineering design, and cost structure of the project. It will provide the essential groundwork for further progress and development in the region.
Next Steps in Project Execution
Work tenders related to the survey are expected to be floated shortly, marking the beginning of the execution phase. Once operational, this railway line will significantly enhance mobility and development prospects in the remote and strategically important regions of Sikkim. This initiative reflects the government's broader goal of expanding rail connectivity to the Northeast and border areas, promoting inclusive regional development.
