New Delhi, March 30 Congress member Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Monday sought clarification from the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha regarding the motion to remove Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, submitted by opposition parties.
Raising the issue during the resumed session of the Upper House, Singhvi informed Deputy Chairman Harivansh, who was chairing the session, that the opposition has "no information" on the matter from the Chairman.
"The notice for the removal of the CEC was submitted 19 days ago, on March 12. The honourable Chairman has not informed the House whether it has been accepted or is under consideration. We have no information. It has now been 19 days," he said.
Without engaging in a debate, Harivansh said, "I will look into it."
Opposition MPs had submitted notices in both Houses of Parliament seeking a motion to remove Kumar, with 130 MPs from the Lok Sabha and 63 MPs from the Rajya Sabha signing the notice, according to sources.
The signatories include members from all the INDIA bloc parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is no longer formally part of the opposition alliance.
The opposition parties have accused the CEC of aiding the ruling BJP on several occasions, especially with the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which they allege aims to help the saffron party at the Centre.
