March 2nd, Aizawl: During the Question and Answer session of the ongoing Assembly session, Mr. K. Sapdanga stated that as of February 5 this year, 26,381 Myanmar refugees have been officially documented. He further noted that during the same period, there were 1,974 Myanmar refugees whose documentation process had not yet been completed.
Responding to supplementary questions, the Home Minister clarified that the refugee camp in Champhai was not constructed by the state government but by the Young Mizo Association (YMA). However, he informed the House that the government did provide financial assistance for its construction.
Regarding reports of taxes being levied on fuel transported to Myanmar through Mizoram, the Minister stated that the government has no official knowledge of such collections. He also mentioned that efforts are currently underway to upgrade the Sangau Police Station.
Addressing the situation regarding refugees from Bangladesh, the Minister explained that accurate documentation remains difficult due to the constant movement of individuals entering and exiting the state, along with frequent arrests of those entering illegally. Furthermore, he asserted that the state government does not permit Myanmar refugees to settle or reside wherever they choose.
