Thane, February 17 Three people were injured and nearly 80 others were rescued after a section of a fifth-floor apartment collapsed onto the floor below in a residential building in Thane city, Maharashtra, early Tuesday morning, officials said.
One of the injured was in critical condition, they said.
The incident occurred at 3:07 am at the five-story Nutan Neelam Apartment, located in Shantinagar in Wagle Estate. The building is approximately 35 years old, according to officials.
A section of a fifth-floor apartment collapsed onto a house on the fourth floor, injuring a resident of the upper apartment and two occupants below, Yasin Tadvi, chief of the disaster management cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation, said.
All three were taken to a hospital in Thane, but the critically injured person was transferred to a medical facility in Mumbai for advanced treatment, he said.
Emergency teams rushed to the scene after being alerted.
"Nearly 80 to 85 residents were living in the building. We have rescued all occupants. About half of them have been moved to a TMC school in Shantinagar for temporary shelter, while the others have arranged their own accommodation," Tadvi said.
The building, consisting of two wings with 26 apartments, is 30 to 35 years old, he informed.
It was previously classified under the C2B category, meaning it required major repairs but was not considered immediately life-threatening.
As the remaining structure is in a dangerous condition, it has been sealed, the official added.
Staff from the power company and police also reached the site to disconnect electricity and secure the area.
