New Delhi, March 12 The Election Commission appointed returning officers (ROs) for all 294 assembly constituencies in West Bengal, which is heading for elections.
Officials said that at the insistence of the Election Commission, the West Bengal government has now provided officers of "appropriate seniority" to be appointed as returning officers for the upcoming assembly elections.
The EC has now issued the notification for the appointment of ROs.
ROs were last appointed in the state in 2023. Some of the ROs appointed are from the 2023 batch, while most are new, an official explained.
The EC had recently visited the state to assess poll preparedness, and the elections could take place in April along with Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry.
The EC and the West Bengal government of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have been at loggerheads on various issues, including the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list.
The opposition is also planning to seek the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar by Parliament, alleging a partisan approach.
