Review Plea Filed: Jharkhand Challenges Saranda Sanctuary Designation.webp

Ranchi, February 26 The Jharkhand government has filed a petition with the Supreme Court, seeking clarification on certain aspects of its earlier order directing the declaration of the Saranda Forest Division as a wildlife sanctuary, according to Jamshedpur MLA Saryu Roy, who made the announcement on Thursday.

Citing a written reply from the state forest department to his question in the assembly, Roy stated that the government sought a review before implementing the court's directive.

On November 13, 2025, the Supreme Court had ordered the Jharkhand government to officially declare the ecologically significant Saranda forest, covering 31,468 hectares, as a wildlife sanctuary.

The state government had been given a three-month deadline from the date of the judgment to issue the final notification.

The apex court had highlighted the ecological importance of the area, referring to the Saranda forests as "one of the most pristine Sal forests in the world."

"The Jharkhand government has not implemented the Supreme Court order declaring the Saranda Forest Division as a wildlife sanctuary, but instead, has filed a petition seeking clarification on certain points of the earlier order. This information has been provided by the government in a written reply to my question in the assembly," Roy told
