April 07, New Delhi: The UN Security Council is scheduled to vote on Tuesday on a revised resolution addressing Iran's threats to the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has effectively blockaded the critical waterway since the United States and Israel launched the war, sending ripples throughout the global economy.
Bahrain had initiated negotiations two weeks ago on a draft resolution that would have provided a clear UN mandate for any state seeking to use force to unblock the strait. However, objections from several permanent members holding veto power led to the text being gradually watered down, and the vote—originally scheduled for late last week—has been delayed multiple times.
The latest draft still demands that Iran end its attacks on commercial vessels and halt any attempts to impede transit passage or freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The draft also expresses the Council's "readiness to consider further measures" against anyone undermining freedom of navigation in the Strait.
