March 3, Kohima: Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has suggested a Select Committee of the House to review the use of "Vande Mataram."

In his remarks during the discussion on the Motion of thanks to the Governor's address in the Assembly session today, the Chief Minister said the matter is both sensitive and of national significance.

He said that the views expressed by all members are respected and well received, adding that democratic deliberation is always positive, as it reflects the nation's foundation of freedom of expression and opinion.

Highlighting that its historical significance must be acknowledged with humility and respect, the Chief Minister said that for generations of freedom fighters, it was not merely a song but a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and resistance against colonial oppression.

Emphasising that India's strength lies in its diversity of faiths, cultures, and traditions, he said that the constitutional position of the National Song must be understood within the framework of fundamental rights, secularism, and constitutional morality.

Referring to an executive order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the National Song and circulated to states and Union Territories, the Chief Minister noted that such directives must be examined in light of Nagaland's special constitutional safeguards.

Mr Rio said that this is a fit case to be referred to the Select Committee of the House, adding that the committee could seek legal opinions and consult all political parties before arriving at a considered decision.
