
Gangtok, April 11 Senior Army officers visited the landslide-affected Taramchu area in North Sikkim on Saturday, and directed to expedite the restoration work to reopen the section as soon as possible, according to a statement.
Road connectivity along the Chungthang-Lachen stretch was disrupted after a breach near the Tarum Chu bridge, caused by heavy rainfall and landslides on April 5.
As many as 1,321 stranded tourists were rescued from Lachen on April 9 by the Army, in collaboration with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the district administration, and the Lachen Dzumsa.
Additional Director General of Border Roads (East) Jitendra Prasad assessed the situation and interacted with BRO personnel deployed at the site.
He directed the personnel to expedite the work for early reopening of the route, a statement said.
During the visit, he conducted a detailed inspection of the progress and reiterated the organization's commitment to restoring and strengthening connectivity in the region.
He noted that such roads are essential lifelines, vital for survival, development, and maintaining connectivity between border communities and the rest of the country.
