
New Delhi, February 23 The installation of rooftop solar power systems has exceeded 30 lakh households since February 2024 under the central government's PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Monday.
It is estimated that rooftop solar systems in 1 crore households may generate 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity, which could result in a reduction of 720 million tonnes of CO2 emissions over the 25-year lifespan of these systems, Joshi, the Minister of New and Renewable Energy, said.
"This is a significant milestone in India's clean energy journey. With 30 lakh households across the nation now equipped with rooftop solar under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, we are harnessing sunlight to create savings and promote sustainability," Joshi said in a post on X.
From reducing electricity bills to strengthening energy security, this achievement reflects the scale and pace of India's green transformation under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he added.
The government launched the scheme in February 2024 with a target of installing rooftop solar systems in one crore households across the country by 2026-27.
