The Indian government launched a scheme on February 15, 2026, to ensure immediate medical treatment for victims of road accidents at the nearest health facility, with government covering expenses up to ₹1.5 lakh.
Jammu and Kashmir Transport Commissioner, Vishesh Mahajan, appealed to the public to assist accident victims by promptly transporting them to hospitals. He stated that the treatment expenses would be covered under the PM Rahat Scheme.
In a social media post, Mahajan urged citizens to pledge to become "Rah Veers" and help those injured in road accidents. "By providing timely assistance, we can save many precious lives," he said.
Under the scheme, every eligible road accident victim on any type of road will be entitled to cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh per victim for a period of seven days from the date of the accident.
Officials stated that stabilization treatment will be provided for up to 24 hours in non-life-threatening cases and up to 48 hours in life-threatening cases, subject to police authentication on an integrated digital system.
