₹60 Cr Sanctioned for Urban Bio Gas Projects in Andhra Pradesh.webp

The Andhra Pradesh government has approved approximately 60 crore rupees to establish five Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) plants in urban local bodies, with the aim of improving waste management and generating clean energy. The decision was issued through a government order by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department.

New plants will be set up in Rajamahendravaram, Nellore, Guntur, and Ongole, while an existing facility in Vijayawada will be revived and upgraded. Each plant will have a processing capacity of 25 tonnes per day (TPD), bringing the total capacity to 125 TPD.

The project will be implemented with technical support from the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, after earlier public-private partnership tenders received limited response. According to revised cost norms, each 25 TPD plant is estimated at 12.60 crore rupees, while the Vijayawada upgrade will cost 9.45 crore rupees.

Funding will be shared by the Centre, State, urban local bodies, and private developers, with developers expected to recover investments through CBG sales over a 20-year period. Swachh Andhra Corporation will serve as the nodal agency and oversee tendering and execution. Officials said the initiative is expected to reduce landfill burden and promote sustainable urban infrastructure.
