Kolkata, March 2 – An application was filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, to obtain details regarding the performance of the former West Bengal Education Minister and ex-Trinamool Congress general secretary as an MLA from the Behala (Paschim) Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district over the last five years.
Chatterjee had been an MLA from that constituency since 2006. His last election from this constituency was in 2021. However, almost his entire term as an MLA was spent in jail after his arrest in July 2022 in connection with the multi-crore "cash-for-school job" case.
Although he was released on bail in November 2025, he remained uninvolved in any political activities, including addressing the concerns of voters from his constituency.
In his application made under Section 6(1) of the RTI Act, 2005, the applicant, Subhrajit Saha, a lawyer at the Calcutta High Court, claimed that he was making the application on behalf of the voters of the Behala (Paschim) Assembly constituency, who have the right to know about Chatterjee's performance as their elected MLA for the last five years.
In his application, the applicant sought details of Chatterjee's performance in the West Bengal Assembly since 2021. This includes his speeches in the Assembly, his participation in zero-hour debates, his "calling attention" motions, and other motions he moved.
The applicant also sought details of Chatterjee's performance as a member of various standing committees of the Assembly, including his attendance at committee meetings, his proposals, and arguments presented by him.
Initially, after being released on bail, Chatterjee expressed his desire to serve as an MLA and even attend Assembly sessions. He also attempted to communicate with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Trinamool Congress general secretary and the party's Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee, and the party's state president, Subrata Bakshi.
However, his communications did not elicit any response from any of them. Subsequently, he withdrew from all political activities and has remained at home.
