Safe and Responsible AI: International Leaders Discuss Governance at India AI Summit.webp

A session on Governing Safe and Responsible AI within Digital Public Infrastructure was held at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi. The session brought together global leaders and experts to examine how artificial intelligence can be integrated into public systems in ways that are safe, accountable, and inclusive.

Speaking at the session, the President of the Republic of Estonia, Alar Karis, praised India's leadership in digital public infrastructure, stating that it is shaping the global conversation on technology, governance, and inclusion.

State Secretary and Head of the Federal Office for Communications, Switzerland, Bernard Maissen, said that international cooperation and capacity building are essential for leveraging AI for good governance worldwide. He noted that the India AI summit demonstrates the value of convening the inclusive global south, focusing the conversation on AI Governance.

Further, Vice Minister of Lithuania, Taurimas Valys, noted that responsible AI begins with strong public sector foundations and emphasised that technology must serve people.

Ambassador-at-large for Artificial Intelligence at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Harry Verweij, underlined that AI governance in digital public infrastructure is about public trust and democratic legitimacy. He stressed that human rights, transparency, accountability, and inclusion are not optional add-ons but are foundational design principles, and efficiency can never come at the cost of dignity and fairness.
