February 23, New Delhi – The military operation against drug lord Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera comes after pressure from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump on Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to intensify efforts against drug trafficking.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico on Sunday urged U.S. citizens to take shelter in several Mexican states and limit their movements following Oseguera’s death in the military operation.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau described Oseguera’s killing as a “major development” for the U.S., Mexico, and Latin America.

Air Canada temporarily suspended operations in Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific coast, while United Airlines and American Airlines canceled flights to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.

President Sheinbaum said that activities are normal in most of Mexico after El Mencho’s death. She added on X, “There is absolute coordination with the governments of all states; we must remain informed and calm.”
