
Saharanpur (UP), March 1 A criminal wanted in a case involving the slaughter of a cow was injured in an encounter with police in the Nagal area here, officials said on Sunday.
Station House Officer (SHO) Rajkumar Chauhan said during routine patrolling and vehicle checks on the Sheetlakhheda-Nainsob road on Saturday night, police in Nagal signaled a motorcycle without a license plate to stop.
The motorcyclist attempted to flee and opened fire at the police team. In self-defence, the police fired, and one of the accused sustained a bullet injury to the leg and was apprehended. Two of his associates managed to escape under the cover of darkness, the SHO said.
The arrested accused, identified as Ragib, a resident of Pandoali village under the Nagal police station area, was found in possession of a locally made pistol and one live cartridge. The motorcycle without a license plate was also seized, Chauhan said.
The injured is currently receiving treatment at the district hospital. An operation is underway to apprehend the suspects who escaped, he said.
Chauhan said that about half a dozen cases, including those related to cow slaughter and under the Arms Act, are registered against Ragib at the Nagal police station.
