Salary and Service Conditions of Indian Judges Under Scrutiny

Salary and Service Conditions of Indian Judges Under Scrutiny.webp

New Delhi, March 24 A Rajya Sabha member called on Tuesday for a comprehensive review of the salaries and service conditions of the Indian judiciary, stating that Indian judges receive lower remuneration than their counterparts in several major global democracies.

Kartikeya Sharma, MP from Haryana, said in the Rajya Sabha that there is a need to work on the remuneration framework of the judiciary that reflects both international benchmarks and the stature of the institution.

He emphasised that competitive and dignified compensation is essential to uphold judicial independence and will further strengthen India's ability to attract and retain the most accomplished members of the Bar to the bench.

Sharma sought a comprehensive review of the salary and service conditions of the Indian judiciary, according to a statement issued by his office.

Emphasising the constitutional centrality of the judiciary, the independent MP noted that judges shoulder the critical responsibility of safeguarding constitutional values, protecting fundamental rights and ensuring the rule of law.

He highlighted that this responsibility is exercised in an increasingly demanding environment marked by heavy caseloads and heightened public expectations.

In this context, Sharma pointed out that existing compensation structures neither adequately reflect the weight of these responsibilities nor keep pace with comparable roles within India's own constitutional framework.

The absence of parity with other high public offices, he argued, raises important concerns about institutional balance and long-term capacity.
