In Assam, the historic river island of Majuli continues to preserve its centuries-old pottery tradition in the Salmora village. This traditional craft has long been the primary source of income for the villagers and remains an important part of Majuli's cultural identity.

Nearly 600 families in the Kumhar (potter) community in Salmora primarily rely on pottery and traditional boat-making for their livelihood. For generations, the income from this craft has supported household expenses, as well as the education of their children.

The unique pottery tradition of Salmora has also significantly contributed to tourism in Majuli, attracting visitors and travelers from around the world who come to witness this age-old craft.
