Sambhal (UP), March 24 The hearing in the Shahi Jama Masjid-Harihar temple dispute case in Sambhal was adjourned to April 22 on Tuesday, as a Supreme Court stay order is in effect, lawyers said.
The matter came up for hearing before the court of Civil Judge (Senior Division) Aditya Singh in Chandausi.
Counsel for the mosque side, Qasim Jamal, told reporters that the next date has been fixed for April 22 as the matter is currently under a stay order of the Supreme Court.
"The case cannot proceed until the stay order of the apex court remains in force. The dates will continue to be extended until then," he said.
Jamal added that a petition filed in the Allahabad High Court had earlier been dismissed, following which an appeal was moved in the Supreme Court, where the stay order was granted.
Counsel for the Hindu side, Shrigopal Sharma, also said that the next date of hearing will be on April 22 in view of the Supreme Court's stay order.
The dispute dates back to November 19, 2024, when a plea was filed in a district court in Sambhal by advocate Harishankar Jain, Vishnu Shankar Jain and others from the Hindu side, claiming that the Shahi Jama Masjid stood on the site of the Harihar temple.
Following a court order, a survey of the mosque was conducted on November 19, 2024, and a second survey was carried out on November 24, after which the matter has been under consideration in the civil court.
Violence broke out in Sambhal during the survey on November 24, 2024, in which four people were killed and 29 police personnel were injured.
Police had registered a case in connection with the violence against Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rahman Barq and Shahi Jama Masjid president Zafar Ali, along with 2,750 unidentified persons, officials said.
