Mumbai, March 11 A 38-year-old man, who reportedly became upset over the removal of a statue of Lord Vishwakarma from his hometown, has been arrested after he attempted to set himself on fire in south Mumbai on Wednesday, police said.

The incident took place at Usha Mehta Chowk in the Nariman Point area, they said.

According to an official from the Marine Drive police station, Dadaso Baban Kalsait, a resident of Takli in Solapur district, arrived at the spot and began pouring a flammable liquid on his body.

He was restrained by others and taken to the police station, the official said.

Police said Kalsait was upset after a statue of Lord Vishwakarma, which had been illegally installed on land belonging to the Lohar Samaj at his place, was removed by the local body a few days ago.

An offense under Section 226 (attempt to commit suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered against Kalsait, the official added. ZA
