Kolkata, March 16 A thunderstorm, reaching a maximum speed of 72 km per hour, passed over Kolkata on Monday evening, accompanied by moderate rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
A thunderstorm typically involves a sudden and sharp increase in wind speed.
The IMD said that an upper-level circulation over Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal, along with strong moisture from the Bay of Bengal, will cause thunderstorms in some districts of the state this week.
Trees were uprooted in several locations in Kolkata and other districts due to the evening thunderstorms.
Rain and thunderstorms also occurred in the North and South 24 Parganas districts, according to officials at the weather department.
People returning home from work faced difficulties due to the inclement weather and limited access to public transport.
