Shanxi Primary School Closes After Norovirus Cases.webp

Taiyuan, March 25 – Mass vomiting and diarrhea cases were reported at Yucai Primary School in the Xiaodian District of Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province in northern China, on Wednesday morning. Initial tests confirmed a norovirus infection, according to local education authorities.

An official from the district education bureau stated that over 100 students have been absent, and efforts are underway to determine the exact number of cases. Classes at the affected school have been suspended, with teachers providing online instruction to ensure that other students continue learning.

Health authorities have launched disinfection protocols and epidemiological investigations, while the cause of the outbreak is still under investigation, Xinhua news agency reported.

According to the World Health Organization, norovirus is a viral illness that is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis globally. Symptoms of norovirus include sudden onset diarrhea and vomiting. Emerging evidence suggests that norovirus infection is associated with intestinal inflammation, malnutrition, and may lead to long-term health problems. It is sometimes referred to as the "stomach flu" or the "stomach bug." However, norovirus illness is not related to the flu, which is caused by the influenza virus. Norovirus causes acute gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach or intestines.

An estimated 685 million cases of norovirus occur annually, including 200 million cases among children under 5. The burden of norovirus is significant; it is estimated that norovirus causes approximately 200,000 deaths per year, including 50,000 child deaths, primarily in low-income countries. Norovirus is estimated to cost $60 billion globally due to healthcare costs and economic losses.

Most people with norovirus illness recover within 1 to 3 days; however, they can still spread the virus for a few days after.

If you have norovirus illness, you can experience severe symptoms, including frequent vomiting and diarrhea. This can lead to dehydration, especially in young children, older adults, and people with other illnesses.
