Gangtok, March 26 Governor Om Prakash Mathur expressed confidence on Thursday that Sikkim would make a significant contribution to a developed India, and said that the Himalayan state was on track to achieve its own development goals with assistance from the central government.
"Sikkim is committed to building a developed India by 2047 and will make a meaningful contribution in this direction," he said in his address to the day-long session of the state legislative assembly.
Mathur said that Sikkim is leading in building a prosperous, just, and environmentally sustainable state with transparency.
He said that the state and central governments are implementing various plans and initiatives for the overall development of the state.
The governor expressed his gratitude for the continuous cooperation and support of the central government.
Mathur also emphasized on various steps taken towards empowering Sikkim as a major tourist destination, with "Bharat Battlefield Darshan" being a key initiative.
Mathur reiterated his government's commitment to increase farmers' income, encourage organic farming, and develop climate-friendly and environmentally protective agricultural systems.
He also expressed a commitment to provide quality healthcare to every citizen of Sikkim through the expansion of health services, modern medical facilities, and public welfare plans.
The House later approved a vote on account (interim budget) to enable the state government to meet essential expenditures smoothly during the period the model code of conduct is in place due to the municipal elections on April 24.
The full budget for the financial year 2026-27 will be presented after the completion of the municipal elections, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who also holds the additional charge of the finance department, said.
The House passed the Sikkim Municipalities (Amendment) Bill, 2026; Supplementary Demands for Grants (2025-26); and the Sikkim Appropriation Bill, 2026.
A state government resolution to rename Pakyong Airport as Trilochan Pokhrel Airport was also adopted by the House. Additionally, all the necessary procedures were completed for the withdrawal of the Scholars University of Skills and Innovation Bill, 2025.
Speaker M N Sherpa later adjourned the House sine die after the presentation of various committee reports, audit findings, and financial reviews.
