Srinagar, April 11 Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah congratulated the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology on a breakthrough in guchi mushroom research on Saturday.

Abdullah, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of the university, praised the university's remarkable achievement, saying that the breakthrough reflects SKUAST-K's unwavering commitment to scientific excellence and the promotion of high-value natural resources.

SKUAST in Srinagar has successfully cultivated the most expensive and rare edible mushroom, known locally as Kangaech, under controlled conditions. This mushroom, which grows naturally in specific high-altitude forest ecosystems during the rainy season, can cost between Rs 15,000 and Rs 40,000 per kilogram.

Highlighting the broader impact of the research, Abdullah noted that the development holds immense potential for enhancing livelihoods, particularly in mountainous and rural regions where guchi (Morel) mushrooms are both an economic asset and an integral part of traditional heritage.

He emphasized that the university's efforts are poised to open new avenues for sustainable cultivation, value addition, and increased income generation.

Abdullah also placed on record his special appreciation for the dedicated efforts of the scientists involved in the research.

Expressing his best wishes, Abdullah expressed hope that the entire SKUAST-K fraternity, including its scientists and researchers, will continue to excel in future endeavors and contribute meaningfully to agricultural innovation and rural prosperity.
