The National Highways Authority of India has begun work on installing a Traffic Monitoring Control System (TMCS) on the Delhi–Katra Expressway and the Jammu–Pathankot National Highway to improve road safety and traffic management.

As part of the project, high-definition 360-degree PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras are being installed along the highways. These cameras will be connected to both highway and police control rooms, enabling real-time monitoring of traffic movement and immediate sharing of information related to accidents.

Officials stated that the system will also facilitate the automatic issuance of e-challans for speeding and other traffic violations.

The TMCS is initially being implemented on the Sapwal–Lakhanpur stretch of the Jammu–Pathankot Highway and on Packages 14 and 15 of the Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway. A centralized control room is being set up in Tarore, in the Samba district, for 24×7 monitoring.

Additional control rooms are also planned at Lakhanpur, Sapwal, and along various sections of the expressway. This will give the police direct access to the system, enabling them to quickly respond to violations.

The advanced PTZ cameras, installed on highway dividers, can rotate 360 degrees and monitor up to 350 meters on both sides. They are capable of capturing images and recording short video clips of incidents.

Officials added that, according to new guidelines from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, such cameras will eventually be installed every kilometer, significantly improving accident response, enforcement of traffic rules, and overall highway safety.
