
The government has immediately released Sonam Wangchuk, who was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) last September. The Home Ministry stated that Sonam Wangchuk's detention occurred in the context of the serious law and order situation that arose in the town of Leh last year.
The Ministry added that he was detained under the provisions of the NSA, pursuant to an order issued by the District Magistrate of Leh, with the aim of maintaining public order. The Home Ministry said that the government remains committed to fostering an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders.
The Ministry added that, in furtherance of this objective and after due consideration, the decision to revoke the detention has been taken. The Ministry reiterated its commitment to providing all necessary safeguards for Ladakh. The Home Ministry said it remains hopeful that the issues concerning the region will be resolved through constructive engagement and dialogue, including through the mechanism of the High-Powered Committee as well as other appropriate platforms.
