Gairsain, March 10 Uttarakhand Forest Minister Subodh Uniyal stated on Tuesday that from the formation of the state in 2000 to January this year, 1,296 people have lost their lives due to human-wildlife conflict.

Uniyal was responding to a question raised by BJP MLA Braj Bhushan Gairola in the state assembly during the ongoing budget session in Gairsain, the state's summer capital.

The forest minister said that from the formation of Uttarakhand in 2000 to January 2026, 1,296 people have died and 6,624 others have been injured in wildlife attacks.

The Uttarakhand government is making continuous efforts to prevent human-wildlife conflict, including the formation of rapid response teams at the forest division level, he said.

Frequent patrolling by departmental staff, trapping animals using cages and tranquilizers, raising public awareness, clearing bushes around villages, and constructing bio-fencing are among the measures taken by the state government, in addition to efforts to protect wildlife habitats.
