
March 13, New Delhi – Para athletes demonstrated remarkable courage and determination at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix held in New Delhi.
Among the standout performers were Rakesh Kumar, who won gold in the discus throw event, and Pradeep Kumar, who secured the silver medal.
Both athletes have inspiring stories. Pradeep Kumar lost a leg during a military operation, while Rakesh Kumar sustained a disability during his service. Despite these challenges, they turned to para sports and continued their pursuit of excellence.
Rakesh Kumar said that after his injury, he trained at the Army Paralympic Node in Pune and began competing in various events. He added that he is now preparing for the next Asian Games.
Pradeep Kumar said that his journey had been challenging, but consistent training over the past two to three years helped him reach the international stage. He said that he is now preparing for the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.
Lieutenant Colonel Nitin Mehta of the Army Paralympic Node said that many soldiers who sustain injuries during service are turning to para sports, giving them a second opportunity to represent the country.
In addition to the armed forces, several social organizations are also working to promote para sports at the grassroots level.
Dr. Sourav Sarin of the Dr. Sarin Foundation said that initiatives are being taken to train and rehabilitate specially-abled athletes across different towns.
Officials say that a strong ecosystem is gradually emerging in the country to support the development of para sports and encourage specially-abled athletes.
