Agartala, March 20 Brigadier Nishant Chandel, DIG of the Assam Rifles, visited the Integrated Check Post at Sabroom in South Tripura on Friday to review operational preparedness, according to an official release.
The ICP at Sabroom was about to become operational, but it has remained closed since the student protests broke out in Bangladesh in June 2024.
"Brigadier Nishant Chandel, DIG, Headquarters 21 Sector Assam Rifles, visited the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sabroom on Friday to review operational preparedness in anticipation of its upcoming operation," the release issued by the Assam Rifles stated.
"During the visit, a civil consultant for the ICP at Sabroom and other officials from the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) briefed the officer on the layout, infrastructure, and operational modalities of the ICP," it said.
The DIG also interacted with Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, focusing on security aspects, anticipated challenges after operation, and measures to ensure the smooth and secure functioning of the facility.
"The Brigadier commended the personnel for their professionalism and boosted their morale," it said, adding that the strategically located Sabroom ICP is expected to significantly enhance cross-border connectivity and trade with Bangladesh.
A bridge (Maitri Setu) connecting Sabroom with Bangladesh's Ramgarh was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart, Sheikh Hasina, on March 9, 2021.
If the ICP becomes operational, it will serve as a major trade link, significantly reducing the distance and logistics costs between the Kolkata port and northeastern states, as Sabroom is approximately 90 km from the Chittagong port in Bangladesh.
