New Delhi, February 20 The Supreme Court on Friday refused to hear a petition seeking a direction to prevent the construction or naming of any mosque or religious structure in the name of Mughal emperor Babur or Babri Masjid.
After a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta indicated its unwillingness to entertain the petition, the petitioner's counsel withdrew it.
The counsel cited the announcement by suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir to build a replica of the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district, West Bengal.
The petition sought directions to the Centre, state governments, and others to consider the petitioner's case and restrain or ban the construction, establishment, or naming of any mosque or religious structure in the name of Babur or Babri Masjid, or any other derivative name, across India.
